Clarke Carlisle is a former Premier League footballer, television presenter and author. His wife Carrie is a newspaper columnist, author and TV presenter.
Clarke came to public prominence as a Premier League footballer who played for Burnley, QPR, Northampton and represented England at U.21 level. After he retired from playing, he moved into broadcasting, working for ITV on their football coverage and he authored two documentaries: Football’s Suicide Secret and the critically acclaimed documentary “Is Football Racist?” for the BBC. He also wrote a book about his career: A Footballer’s Life.
As a former Chairman of the PFA, Clarke was a well known figure in football but he came to the attention of the wider public after a high profile suicide attempt, his second attempt, after a career blighted my mental health issues.
He and his wife Carrie deliver powerful, emotional, educational and inspiring speeches together, as they offer the dual insight to what it is like to live with a mental illness and what it is like to live with someone with a mental illness.
They are the only speakers that cover the topic of adverse mental health from viewpoint of both the sufferer and the observer. They won the 2018 MIND Media Speaking Out award for our contribution to raising awareness in Mental Health and they have had over 100 million downloads of their Mental Health podcast from 2020.
They played a key role in the partnership between the EFL and MIND, speaking on their behalf at Wembley at the Carabao Cup Final in 2019.
They don’t just offer their story, but leave audiences with many practical tips that they encourage them to incorporate into their daily lives.
